How and why we use cookies on this website - and how you can control them.
Most websites use cookies, and we do too. A cookie is a very small file that a website stores on your computer or device to save and collect basic information.
Using cookies means we can see which pages are most popular, spot any pages that are broken, and create a better experience for you in future. Cookies don’t harm your device, and the information they collect is not personally identifiable.
Most web browsers automatically accept cookies, but you can usually change your settings to prevent that. Each browser and device is different, so check your browser or phone’s help menu to learn how to change your preferences. If you disable all cookies, you’ll still be able to browse our site. Here are guides for some popular browsers:
Third-party analytics. These cookies collect general information about how visitors use our website so we can improve it for everyone. We track how much traffic the site receives, which pages are visited most often, generalised location data, the types of browser and device being used, and whether visitors encounter error messages or broken links. This is statistical data and does not identify you specifically. We may share this data with a third-party web developer.
Google Analytics. We use Google Analytics, a web analytics service provided by Google, Inc. Google Analytics sets a cookie to evaluate use of the site and compile a report for us. We use this information to understand how people use the site, improve navigation, and make sure it displays properly for all users. For more information, see Google’s cookies & technologies policy, and you can opt out of tracking here.
Social cookies. These let you share content from our website with friends on social networks, get in touch and follow us. They are set by the social network to enable authentication, sharing and liking. Some pages may also contain content from sites like YouTube, which may set their own cookies. We have no control over third-party cookies - please check those websites for more information.
Email cookies. These tiny graphics are dropped into your browser by our email provider to monitor the performance of our email campaigns - for example, how many people open an email or click a link. They are used solely to measure the success of our campaigns.
Targeting cookies. We sometimes run online advertising campaigns and use targeting cookies to show you ads we think you’ll find relevant, and to limit how often you see a particular ad. Opting out doesn’t mean you’ll see fewer ads, but the ads you do see will be less relevant to you. Advertising preferences are usually set in your browser using the links above.
Web beacons. Cookies are not the only way to track site visitors. We may also use similar technologies such as web beacons (“tracking pixels”, “clear gifs”, “action tags”) to measure how effective our online advertising is. In most cases these rely on cookies to function, so changing your browser’s cookie settings will prevent them from working.
When you first visit our site you can choose to accept or decline analytics cookies using the banner at the bottom of the page. Analytics cookies stay switched off until you accept. You can change your mind at any time by clearing this site’s data in your browser, which will bring the banner back.
Cookies are only part of the picture. For how we collect, store and use your personal and clinical information - and your rights under GDPR - please read our Privacy Notice for Patients (PDF).
